Powerslave is the fifth studio album by the heavy metal band Iron Maiden, released on September 3, 1984. In 2017, it was voted the 38th best metal album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
This album, like The Number of the Beast, is one of Iron Maiden's greatest works. It marks a time when the band was very tight-knit and friendly, as in previous years the ego clashes between Steve Harris and Bruce Dickinson always left uncertainty about Bruce's continued presence in the band.
Recorded in the Bahamas and mixed in the United States, the album opens with "Aces High," a song about aerial combat in World War II. This is followed by "2 Minutes to Midnight," composed by Adrian Smith with lyrics by Bruce, dealing with the constant threat of nuclear war that loomed at the time. Next is an instrumental Egyptian-style track from the album, called "Losfer Words (Big 'Orra)." Then came the songs "Flash of the Blade," "The Duellists," and "Back in the Village." Next was "Powerslave," composed by Bruce Dickinson, which deals with Egyptian themes and how people can become "slaves to power." Finally, the "saga" "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," a long thirteen-minute song about a man cursed by an albatross. It was written based on the eponymous poem by the 18th-century English Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
