It is the eleventh studio album by the heavy metal band. Released in 1998. The title Virtual XI was chosen to coincide with two extra-musical factors: the release of the band's computer game, Ed Hunter, and the fact that the 1998 World Cup took place in June of the year of release. Steve Harris explained: “We figured our fans were very similar to us, with very similar interests, so we thought, ‘It’s the year of the 1998 World Cup. Let’s incorporate football into the new album.’ And we were working on a computer game at the same time, so we decided to bring some elements of it onto the album as well.”
